Did you know that your senses influence your emotions and your mood? Smells, sounds, colors and even daylight have a direct impact on their behavior.

The alarm clock goes off. You try to open your eyes, but it’s hard, and you don’t know why. You are not able to create a single thought, to weave a single idea. Finally, you get up. Open the window and look out. The sky is grey. How do you feel?

Climate. Light. Smells. Sounds. All of this influences our mood. The emotions you feel in each moment. Think about the way you dress when you’re sad. The natural tendency is to use dark colors like gray, brown or black.

Now think of happy moments. Everything is colorful. Orange, yellow, green, blue.

Smells and sounds also evoke emotions

A smell can transport you to a moment in your childhood, to the cake your mother baked for your birthday. A song can remind you of a special person, your first dance, your first kiss. A certain song can evoke happy moments and others less so.

Your mood in the morning, the colors of the clothes you wear, the memories you have, how you behave: it  all has to do with the emotions you feel.

All of these emotions, contrary to what they might seem, are good. You can give it a positive or negative value depending on how you feel.

I know that sometimes you don’t want the people around you to know how you really feel, so you hide your emotions with a mask so you don’t look vulnerable or sad. At other times, it is you yourself who consciously deceive yourself about your true feelings. In any case, you wear armor to protect yourself and not get hurt.

But, you know what? If the people who love you don’t know how you feel, then they won’t be able to help. And if you don’t ask for help, they won’t ask either. Learn to ask. Possibly you learned not to ask for anything, learned that you have to be self-reliant.

So, when you’re in a situation you don’t know how to get out of, don’t know or don’t dare to ask others for help (remembering that asking for help is not bad, on the contrary, it brings you even closer to the people you love), you are telling them that you trust them. And people who love you also have emotions.

How do you feel about feeling good every day?

By managing emotions, you also learn. For example, if you feel sad, you can change your mood by wearing bright colors. If you feel melancholy, listen to upbeat music that makes you dance. Breaking barriers and changing your attitude towards the situations and circumstances that make you live alone is in your hands. You have the power to decide how you want your day to go.

There is a short story by Jorge Bucay that tells that sadness and anger met in a magical pond to bathe in each other’s company. Anger, which as always was in a hurry, showered very quickly and came out of the water. She picked up her clothes, but since she didn’t clearly distinguish reality, she didn’t realize that they weren’t her clothes, but those of sadness.

So, when sadness came out of the water, slowly and unaware of the passage of time, he realized that his clothes were not there, and he had no choice but to wear the only item he found: the dress of anger.

So take this into account. Just as you sometimes want to hide your emotions behind a mask, other people are doing the same.

Knowing how to manage emotions is not always easy

When you get involved in an argument with your partner or friend, remember that it ‘s possible that you’re hiding your true feelings behind your words.  Your screams may just be a sign not to show externally how bad you feel.

Learning to understand others is a sign of wisdom. And you can do that if you stop to think about how you feel sometimes, what it means to you, and how certain emotions you feel affect you when you have a memory or when you hear a melody.

It’s up to you to decide how you want your day to be. And remember that being happy is also learned .
