Social Media Can End Your Relationship

Social Media Can End Your Relationship

Gustavo Cerati used to say that “what seduces is never where it is generally thought” . It appears that social media has a similar effect. They have become not only a tool for contact, but also for disunity and breakup of relationships.

Is it possible that social media has turned into “weapons of mass destruction” when it comes to couples and relationships? It seems so. According to some studies, they cause millions of divorces a year.

We cannot forget that human beings interact through social networks, but they also make public a large part of their lives. Facebook or Twitter are a showcase for the world of billions of people.

Social networks have become a way to meet many people in a short time, and the number of new users is only increasing. This is frightening if we think about the world, because there are so many people involved. The power these tools exert in our lives is evident, and for many people they are essential.

Divorces caused by social media

Many studies have been carried out on the impact of social media on our lives, but we will look at one in particular, carried out by a famous American psychology magazine.

According to recent data, the social network Facebook alone has been the cause of approximately 28 million divorces worldwide. This may seem like an exaggeration, but a few years ago the American Family Lawyers Association confirmed these numbers, claiming that this tool caused 20% of separations in the United States.

In this case we focus on Facebook because it is currently the most important social network. There are many others, but it is on the network created by Mark Zuckerberg that most feel in their own environment. Some users even use it to end their relationships.

Why do social media cause divorce?

If your relationship is long-lasting and healthy, and your behavior on social media is sensible, it’s normal that nothing bad happens, and this data shouldn’t be worrying. However, there are facts and situations that cause the separation.

Studies on the use of nets to find a sporadic or lasting relationship report that 58% of men and 80% of women use nets for this purpose.

It is evident that couples who have reached an impasse in their relationship, who are unhappy for any reason, find in social media a way to meet other people and make new friends or maybe something more. But there are many other reasons:

  • The constant impact of information from people looking for friends shows users that they don’t need to settle for an unhappy relationship. Social networks show a large number of attractive, flashy, compatible profiles, etc. Profiles are a window into a world full of stimuli.
  • Tolerance for facing the problems of a relationship has diminished in recent years. Today, it is very easy to find quick solutions instead of looking for mature love towards a particular person.
  • Insecurity is another point that causes couples to separate. We can control each other, see their posts, their connection time, their photos and relationships. This causes a certain distrust and fear to appear that destroy communication and mutual respect.
  • Exposure to constant harassment may be another reason. Maybe you already have a relationship, but on social networks many people may be interested in you looking for adventure, a date… Some of them are very persuasive, so we have to have a firm attitude to avoid dangerous situations.

It is clear that social networks have changed the way we see the world and relationships have not been left out of it either. Social networks are a reality that should be used with common sense, because they can cause fear, insecurity or sadness… Take care of the person next to you, and remember that social networking is a mere entertainment, not a way of life.
