The Dangerous Anxiety That Comes When Trying to Control Time

Learning to organize our lives in relation to time can allay anxiety and improve our quality of life. Anxious people make a fundamental mistake: they believe that the more they worry, the more they try to control their time, the closer they are to solving the problem.

People who suffer from generalized anxiety believe that simply because they are worrying about a certain issue they are trying to resolve it. But in reality it’s not quite like that. We worry about everything we have to solve and we end up not solving anything. Many thoughts invade our mind and we don’t know how to stop it. This turns into daily torture, we get confused and activities pile up.

Don’t try to control time, it can swallow you

You’ve been told many times that in order to organize your life, you need to organize your time. The truth is that we have to try to organize activities and be productive in the time we have to carry them out, whether at work or in any recreational activity. On our energy and concentration will depend on the fruitful or unprofitable result.

The problem is trying to find the right moment for everything we do. Planning everything down to the smallest detail and setting a time can make it seem like the person is organized, but we can’t go overboard. This can turn into a mental prison and we have the feeling that we are simply consuming time.

Releasing the concept of future tense releases our mind into the here and now

One of the best known and most used expressions is “Carpe Diem”. These two words embody a revolution against the procrastinated life, the proposed task and the freedom embodied in a prison of obligations with invisible iron bars. It is popularly translated as “enjoy the moment or your day”. It is also used as an expression to ask to avoid wasting time with useless things or as a justification for immediate pleasure, without fear of the future.

For some, the present moment requires their full attention, and others get lost in that timeline. Each person has their own history and temperament and not everyone is able to apply concepts beneficial to their own well-being.

Hence the importance of knowing yourself, knowing your capabilities, being dynamic and finding balance in your time management.

Don’t try to control the time to flow with it

Many of the Eastern views on some philosophical issues are completely different from the view we have here in the West. This is not to say that our view is better or worse, but that understanding these differences brings a learning curve.

Thinkers like Jiddu Krisnamurti have long been questioned for their views on the human psyche; a point of view that is totally contrary to our ideas. While in Western culture our view of time focuses on the future and planning, for other cultures time should not be guided by this dimension.

In addition to proven procedures for the treatment of anxiety, it would be interesting to propose a revolution in concepts as important as time and how our thinking is related to our individual perception.

We must try to use our thinking to organize ourselves better, but always open to changes and unexpected setbacks, without trying to control the time. Don’t ignore your body and sensations, your well-being, and focus on the present. Remember that anything you invest in self-knowledge will always be a profitable investment.
