Better To Know Better Than Bad Ones

Better the good to know than the bad known

If you want me to tell you a secret,  I stopped agreeing with this popular saying “Better the bad acquaintance than the good to know”  when my math teacher got sick and someone else came to replace her… We were used to the same teacher who he had been with us for a few years and that about the move didn’t seem very exciting. In fact, I even remember how the mothers and students commented on this saying in a joking tone…

When this new teacher appeared who didn’t scold us when we made a mistake and who had a patience and a sweetness that the other lacked, I understood that this little fear we had for a few days had been totally absurd. Since then I have decided to banish this popular saying from my life forever.

Let’s leave this old saying behind

No, we didn’t make a mistake, the popular saying goes: “Better the bad acquaintance than the good to know”, but do you really believe that’s right? While it’s true that almost everyone agrees with the vast majority of proverbs, in this case it’s a very round no…

Why?  Don’t you think it’s a saying that applauds fear? Do you think it’s better to stay in your “comfort zone”, even if it’s bad, than to get out of it and discover new worlds that could be wonderful for you?

Imagine that you’re stuck in a romantic relationship that doesn’t go well and a new love appears and knocks on your door… imagine that you’ve been in a job for years that you don’t like, but in which you’re comfortable and secure, and the opportunity presents itself of your life…

Do you really think that what the saying goes is right? Think for a moment and stop being afraid of fear. The scare of going onstage lasts a few minutes, but… what about the enormous joy you feel when you hear the applause? Is it worth it or not?

How to challenge this old saying

To stop being afraid of changes or of what life can bring us, here are some tips that will help you take the step to make the change in your life:

  • Little by little. We human beings are like that, change frightens us. But if you’re afraid of big change,  why not start with small changes to experiment with? People are afraid of change itself, but we are also much more adaptable than we think.
  • With the head. Consider both situations, is it really worth it to bet on the new and leave the old behind? Well then, take off those worn shoes and put on the new ones.
  • Replace negative phrases and thoughts with positive ones. It all starts in our heads. Instead of thinking “This is going to be a disaster”, why not change to “This is going to be an experience that will help me grow as a person and I’m sure it’s already worth living because of it”?

  • Don’t criticize yourself so much. Don’t be so picky on yourself. We often don’t want to change anything because we’re going to punish and blame ourselves if we make a mistake. Why don’t you allow yourself to be wrong? What’s wrong? Work on your self-esteem.
  • Think about all the things you can do that you are missing. Wonderful things may be waiting for you and you let them slip away out of fear. Think for a moment about all the people you know who made changes in their lives… changed boyfriends, jobs, homes… and their lives changed 100%.
  • Stop being so dramatic. Why always imagine the worst? Why can’t you imagine the best? When we have positive thoughts and are also positive, the less good things that happen to us don’t seem so bad, simply because we don’t give them much importance.

Let go of that old saying now,  don’t be grounded in fear, meet new experiences, new people, a new life. Bet on change.
