Is It Possible To Control Impulses? Learn How

Is it possible to control impulses? learn how

If you often ask yourself the reasons for your actions and don’t have a logical explanation for them, or if you often tend to regret what you do, perhaps you should learn to control the impulses that lead you to act in such a way.

The consequences of doing something without thinking can be very serious. These steps you take without seeing, these words you say without measuring what will cause in the other… fortunately all of this has a solution. Like everything in life! We propose that you put all your efforts into changing your impulsiveness to get along better with others and be more at ease with yourself.

Controlling impulses goes beyond asking for forgiveness

Surely you are so used to saying “I’m sorry” that those words don’t make much sense to you anymore. Or maybe you can’t even express your regret after hurting someone’s feelings. Let alone apologize to yourself when you get it wrong!

Impulsiveness can bring a positive or negative result… it all depends on the situation. For example, if you are shy and because of a thoughtless act, you decide to ask a girl you like for a date and she accepts… congratulations! But if because of your impulses you say horrible things to your boyfriend or girlfriend and it generates an argument or a breakup, that is no longer an ability to become a problem.

That’s not to say that you can’t tell others what you think or feel, but often our words come out of our mouths faster than our brain takes to process. That’s when there can be inconveniences if things don’t go as well as you wanted and your words hurt those in front of you.

Advice for controlling impulses

As a first measure, you should determine if you are an impulsive person or perhaps a little “verborrhagic” without a solution (although there is a solution for everything, as we have said before). For this,  you need to observe yourself in different situations.

How do you usually respond to certain stimuli such as a “buy now” sign? If your first thought is to shell out a good amount of money on an object you certainly don’t need, then impulsiveness is stronger than you.

There’s no doubt that if you wait a few minutes, walk around the store again, and think about it, you’ll find that you need that money to pay rent or buy a new pair of shoes for your child.

The impulsive voice that makes you act in a specific way may scream for you, but you must not allow it to change your life, no matter how loud it is. You should be the one who takes the reins whenever this urge to do something without thinking takes over.

A good technique to let go of impulsiveness is to analyze the consequences of your actions or your words. May your bedside phrase be “I need to think better”. That way it will be easier to make the right decisions or, at least, more thoughtful ones.

With a cool head, no pressure and a thorough study of the pros and cons of each decision, everything will be much simpler. Of course, this is an effort and takes time, but when you start to notice the results, you will realize how much work is worth it.

Dissatisfaction brings us impulsiveness

In the society we live in, visual stimuli and advertising make us think that if we don’t have such a thing, we are not happy. As if a new pair of shoes or an expensive bag were the cure for depression (but that will be the subject of another article).

Dissatisfaction can bring impulsiveness  and, in turn, be expensive… When you go shopping (or rather, before leaving home), ask yourself if you really need those nice pants you saw in the window or if only the want to have. Also, answer the question: “What do I need to give up to buy them?”.

You can do the same when you’re about to say something bad. “Is my need to speak stronger than what my words can cause?” ; “Is it really good for the other to hear from my mouth what I’m about to say?”

Of course, we shouldn’t always be silent and agree with everything, but maybe  if we think about our sentences better, the repercussions will be less drastic. Instead of saying “you did it all wrong”, choose to say “maybe there are things you can improve on”. You will be saying almost the same thing, but with a different attitude!
