As we cannot share this story in its entirety, let’s take a short tour of its most important passages, so that every reader has an idea of the content of the story.

The old legends tell that, in a very distant country, there lived a tsar and a tsarina who had a mute son named Ivan. From an early age, he became close friends with a young man from the palace who told him stories.

At the age of 12, Ivan asked the young man to tell him another story. However, the servant told him that his parents were going to have a daughter who would devour his entire family. If he wanted to survive, he should ask his parents for the best horse and run as far away as possible.

Ivan spoke to his father, who was thrilled to hear his son’s voice for the first time in 12 years. Overcome by happiness, he gave the horse to the boy, who was mounted on him as far as the animal would take him.

Ivan’s Adventure

Ivan went out and met many people on his trip, whom he asked for shelter. Among the characters, he saw two elderly women who gave him no shelter because they were weaving a play that, once finished, would take their lives.

There were also two men, Vertudub, who would die when he finished uprooting some oak trees, and Vertogez, who would end his life when he finished touring some mountains.

Ivan was disconsolate and arrived at the palace of the sister of the Sun, where he was welcomed with affection and treated like a son. But the boy was crying and was not happy, as he missed his home so much.

Finally, the Sun’s sister allowed him to return to her house and gave him a comb, a brush, and two magic apples that would make those who ate them rejuvenate.

the way back

Ivan returned by the same path and found the people who had not given him shelter. First, he saw Vertogez, who only needed to go around one more mountain. The young man threw the brush on the ground, causing new mountains to appear. The man rejoiced and went on with his work.

Shortly thereafter he found Vertodub, who had only three more trees to uproot before he died. The boy threw the comb to the ground causing large forests to grow, which meant that the man did not have to die, as he had work to do.

Finally, Ivan found the two old women and presented them with the rejuvenating apples. After eating them, they turned into exuberant young men who, to reward him, presented the boy with a handkerchief capable of creating a lake when shaken.

Outcome

So Ivan returned to his home. His sister received him with affection and asked him to play the harp while she prepared the food. However, in reality, the witch was sharpening her teeth to devour him.

Warned by a mouse – which replaced Ivan on the harp so that the boy could flee – Ivan ran, but not fast enough, as the witch was catching up to him. So he shook out his handkerchief to create a lake and slow her down.

In his escape, Ivan passed close to Vertodub who, aware of what was happening, piled up tree trunks to create a mountain that would stop the witch, who gnawed at the trees to continue her pursuit.

Soon he approached the place where Vertogez was, who, aware of the situation, moved the highest mountain to the center of the path that separated Ivan from the witch to delay her.

And so Ivan arrived at the door of the Sun’s sister’s palace and asked them to open the gates, and this was soon done. Meanwhile, the witch asked that her brother be delivered. In addition, he proposed a deal: he would eat the boy if she weighed more than he did on the scale; otherwise, he would die at the boy’s hands.

Ivan was the first to weigh himself. Then, when the witch climbed, the boy took advantage of the impulse of her weight to take a great leap that would take him to heaven, where another palace of the Sun’s sister awaited him, in which he would live forever, safe and sound.
